Evaluating and Integrating Feedback

Feedback is an essential part of learning more effective classroom techniques. It helps student teachers understand the methods being studied and gives them clear guidance on how to improve their teaching. Feedback can improve confidence, self-awareness and enthusiasm for learning. Effective feedback can enhance the learning experience, improve performance assessment and help establish goals for improvement.
Evaluation is a valuable resource whether it comes from an experienced teacher or observer or from my students. I try to learn from the evaluations and work to constantly improve my own performance. It is important to me to keep in touch with how my students feel about my teaching, adjusted to keep the age and experiences of the student in mind. One student wrote in the comments section that "thought was nice, but then became a control freak" in reference to my improvement of classroom management techniques. I found that to have better direct the flow of discussion into science related discussions.  One of my biggest challenges became one of my biggest accomplishments in that the student went from being a disrupting influence with poor grades, to being (mostly) a contributing class member with grades that averaged in the 85% range. I took the time to get to know the student and we were able to work out a strategy that worked well for both of us.

The final evaluation that came form my mentor teacher and from the field observer gave me multiple areas of that I plan on improving in the future. When in the process of teaching, there is no way for me to objectively observe myself. The role of observer is a difficult one, and I am certainly appreciative of all the effort put into the evaluations that I received. The feedback was particularly useful in that it was specific to the lesson being taught, but still indicative of area of improvement overall.

From the surveys that I received back from my students several had checked "sometimes" to the item "Teacher explains how topic could be useful someday" and while I had made a point to start off each unit with examples of how the information could be used in real life, the students were not retaining that knowledge., This matched with the observer stating that each lesson should contain a reiteration of how the information could be useful.

In the future I plan to use the evaluations I receive to better where to put my efforts in improving my performance. I know I am a beginner teacher and I deliberately chose the UTeach program to help me get as good a head start in teaching science as I could find. With the guidance that is provided, I know I will be able to foresee opportunities for growth and improvement as an educator.
