My Teaching Philosophy

The teacher's role is to act as a guide, providing access to information rather than acting as the primary source of information. The students' search for knowledge is a journey rather than a destination as they learn to find answers to their questions which lead to new questions. For students to construct and retain knowledge, they need the opportunity to discover for themselves and practice skills in authentic situations. Providing the students with opportunities to have experience with hands-on activities and then allowing them  adequate time to use the equipment and technology then reinforces the lesson while still allowing for individual discovery and construction of knowledge to occur.

A classroom is a community made up of many individuals who have various needs and abilities.
I believe all students can learn, and I understand the importance of differentiation in the classroom, both for ability and differing learning styles. I believe that all children can reach their full potential  if they are provided with the support and encouragement in a positive learning environment. Each member of the learning community must feel as if they are valued and respected.

All teachers are students as well. I see teaching as providing opportunities for ongoing learning and personal growth. One of my hopes as an educator is to instill a love of learning in my students, just as my teachers did for me. I plan to share my own passion for learning with my students. Our world keeps changing so fast and becoming more globally cohesive. To meet future challenges we will need the creativity and adaptability of people who love learning and discovering new things, as well as the ability to apply what they have learned. I believe there is a need for compassionate and dedicated teachers and I will strive to be continually learning right along with my students.
